Pollution and skin: what are the impacts?

Just like the sun or cigarettes, pollution has harmful effects on our skin: dryness, sensitivity, spots, premature aging, clogged pores, imperfections and dullness.

 

Pollution has several sources and can be present indoors: heating, paint, blue light from screens, as well as outdoors: fine particles, gas, ozone, etc.

Today it affects more than 90% of the population. It induces oxidative stress on the skin, i.e. an overproduction of free radicals. When they are too numerous, free radicals will "oxidize" the skin cells. The latter will then have difficulty in repairing themselves. The first consequence will be premature skin aging.

The harmful effects of pollution on your skin and face

The main effects of pollution on our skin:

❌ Premature aging:

Fine particles disrupt the proper functioning of cell renewal and the skin's protection mechanism, notably by destroying antioxidants. Blue light also plays a harmful role with the same mechanism of oxidative stress, which can cause fine lines or pigment spots.

❌ Dull complexion:

The oxidation of sebum, naturally present on the surface of the skin, gives a greyish aspect to our complexion.

❌ Dryness/Dehydration:

The polluting fumes will cause irritation and sometimes severe dryness.

❌ Blemishes/Acne:

The secreted sebum is affected and oxidized by pollution. It accumulates on the surface of the skin, clogging the pores which become dilated. Blackheads and blemishes appear. Acne becomes more difficult to treat and can worsen.
