Probiotics and prebiotics, what are they used for?
We hear a lot about probiotics, prebiotics and their beneficial effects on health... Although they are closely related, they must be differentiated in order to fully understand them and consider their uses.
Probiotics, the "good bacteria
Probiotics are living micro-organisms which, when used in sufficient quantities, will have a beneficial effect on the body: better digestion, healthy skin, fewer infections, etc. These are "good bacteria", each strain of which has specific properties to respond to a specific problem. For example, some probiotics are able to support the bacterial flora of the skin: lactobacilli transform sugars into lactic acid, the objective of which is to lower the skin's pH in order to eliminate bad bacteria and soothe the epidermis.
Prebiotics, the food of good bacteria
With only one letter difference, prebiotics should not be confused with probiotics: they are their food and are therefore essential to their functioning. Generally derived from fruits, green vegetables, legumes or honey, prebiotics are related to dietary fibers and are intended to promote the development of good bacteria to make them even more effective.
Probiotics and prebiotics: their effects on the vaginal flora
The balance of the vaginal flora is fragile and it sometimes takes very little to cause irritation, itching, dryness, discharge... In just a few years, probiotics and prebiotics have become the essential treatment for many gynecological conditions. They are also very effective in improving the hydration of the vagina and thus combat vaginal and vulvar dryness.
