How can you protect your skin from stress?
Stress is a reaction of our body to an aggression and it has a real impact on our body and on our skin.
To defend ourselves in the face of a stressful situation, our body's system sounds an alarm: the body prepares itself and will then prioritize the mobilization of our energy towards the vital organs.
What does this mean? The hormones released at that moment, such as adrenalin, will increase heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature.
The body, which is suffering a shock, will then try to "resist": other hormones (glucocorticoids) are then secreted to provide the vital organs with sufficient energy to defend themselves.
When stress intensifies and the situation is prolonged, the body can no longer self-regulate. It's flooded with hormones.
And this hyperactivity will have direct consequences on our skin.
Under stress, the skin is affected by a marked increase in cortisol production. This hormone triggers a process of "oxidative stress" that generates free radicals. An inflammatory reaction occurs to defend the skin.
But this process greatly sensitizes the skin, resulting in an increase in skin pathologies:
🚨 Blemishes and acne
Overproduction of cortisol leads to overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous glands. In excess, this leads to the appearance of comedones, blackheads, pustules, papules and cysts. Stress-related acne can appear on the face, but also on the body, such as the chest or back.
Stress can also trigger outbreaks of seborrheic dermatitis, caused by the proliferation of a yeast that feeds on excess sebum. This benign condition causes redness and scaling of the skin or scalp.
🚨 Premature skin aging
Weakened by stress, and in particular by exposure to free radicals (again due to overproduction of cortisol), the skin will produce less collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. This oxidative stress has a direct impact on skin ageing, accelerating the loss of elasticity and firmness, and the appearance of pigmentation spots, wrinkles and fine lines.
🚨 Loss of radiance
By vasoconstructing and vasodilating the skin's blood vessels, stress-induced hormones (such as adrenalin, vasopressin and oxytocin) affect the microcirculation of skin tissue, resulting in a paler complexion, more pronounced dark circles and the appearance of bags under the eyes.
🚨 Dryness and itching
Atopic, dry or sensitive skin is particularly exposed to the effects of stress. In fact, stress destabilizes the skin barrier, making it all the more fragile in the face of sensitizing factors. With stress, they are more prone to eczema, psoriasis or simply dehydration, flaking, tightness, itching and irritation.
More generally, stress also has an impact on our bodies, altering our psycho-physiological balance and leading to certain disorders.
🚨 By threatening this balance, stress (like anxiety) can lead tomuscular tension and even digestive disorders.
🚨 It can also impact our sweating. This " emotional perspiration " is often felt, in the hands, feet and armpits, and will have a more pronounced odor. And unfortunately, while stress promotes sweating, the opposite is also true.
🚨 Stress will also have a detrimental effect on sleep quality and sleep onset, resulting in chronic fatigue and mental and physical exhaustion.
🚨Finally, the apprehension of a state of stress can also have significant consequences for our brain. The effects of stress on our brain are often expressed through our emotions, and we can find ourselves struggling to manage them.
And when stress becomes chronic and the hormonal imbalance it causes persists, the entire nervous system overreacts. Our body's reserves are depleted, and symptoms can worsen (cardiovascular disease, depression...etc.).
