Counteracting the effects of chlorine and limestone on the skin
How to take care of your skin against chlorine and limescale?
Depending on their concentration and your sensitivity, chlorine and lime can cause irritation, tightness, dryness and sometimes burning, itching or even red patches!
With the repeated containment, the water sometimes remained less long in the pipes. Thus, we could sometimes notice a more freshly chlorinated water(source: Veolia). Nothing dramatic, no more damage after a shower than after a swimming pool. But for already sensitive skin, chlorine can cause tightness and dryness.
Limescale content can cause discomfort to our skin and hair.
If limestone is necessary to our body because it is a good contribution in calcium, magnesium and other minerals, it can also irritate the sensitive skins. Also limiting the foaming power of our shower gels, we tend to use more. Most shower gels contain irritating surfactants (SLS). A true vicious circle, and always more irritations...
How to protect your body and hair from the harmful effects of chlorine and limescale
To limit its various inconveniences on your skin:
- Use a mild soap or a pH-neutral cleaner.
- Favour showers over baths
- Dry yourself well after a shower
- Add a softener or filter to your faucet.
- Moisturize your skin regularly and systematically after a shower. A care product should be applied to restore the hydrolipidic film of the epidermis, which has been altered by the elements.
- A cocktail of aloe vera and vegetable oil will promote cell renewal while providing moisture and protection to the skin.

PS: it works on a daily basis when you get out of a shower with water filled with limescale as well as when you get out of a swimming pool with chlorinated water.
Concerning hair:
Limescale deposits settle on the hair fiber, weakening the cuticle. The cuticle is the outermost layer of the hair, which naturally protects it. In regular contact with limescale, the hair becomes rough and dull.
The calcium crystals will also deposit on the scalp, which can lead to itching, redness and even plaques if you are prone to dermatitis or eczema.
In addition, hard water once again prevents conventional shampoos from lathering as desired. Concentrated in irritating tensio-actives, by wanting to use more to lather more, we risk irritating our scalp.
To neutralize this damage, you need to apply a care product with an acidic pH that will help tighten the scales and add shine.
