How to protect the vulva weakened by menstruation and pregnancy?
Why can the vulvar area become fragile during and after menstruation or even after pregnancy?
Just like the vaginal area, the vulva can suffer from discomfort when menstruation approaches: itching, irritation, burning or even redness.
The cause is generally related to pH variations caused by hormonal changes and upheavals, but also to external aggressions.
Generally speaking, the pH of the vulvar area can be described as being rather "acidic" (at the level of the mucous membranes, it is on average 4.8). Its role is to protect the intimate area from the proliferation of bad bacteria and fungi.
❌ But some creams or shower gel, detergents or even menstrual blood come to modify the pH of the intimate area.
Let's take blood for example: it has a neutral pH (around 7) and can therefore participate in the disturbance of the flora.
Also, the hormonal variations linked to a pregnancy lead to a fragility of the vaginal area and by extension the vulvar area. And this fragility can lead to the appearance of infections such as mycosis.
Here are some prevention tips:
🩲prefer cotton underwear
❌avoid fabric softeners and other detergents that may disrupt the flora
🧼 use a mild soap with a suitable ph
🧴 and finally, moisturize the vulvar area.
With her co-creator Laura @mydearvagina but also with over 4000 women concerned about vulvar health, we co-created South Beauty, our soothing and protective gel dedicated to the vulva.
Designed as an all-in-one care gel, it soothes, moisturizes and protects the vulvar mucosa. Its light, creamy gel texture rebalances and strengthens the area, thanks to a cocktail of pre- and probiotics that strengthen the skin's microbiome (the good bacteria that protect our body) and relieve irritation. The "pre" biotics rebalance and strengthen the flora to stimulate the immune system.
In addition to being a soothing and moisturizing, South Beauty is a great ally that reduces discomfort after sex or sports, in addition to fighting against vulvar dryness sometimes due to hormonal changes.
