Acne

 ❌ 1. Acne and lack of hygiene

Acne is not due to a lack of hygiene but to an overproduction of sebum which can have several origins, such as hormonal variations or too frequent and aggressive cleaning. We should therefore use gentle cleansers, such as Clean That Face, which are adapted to skin with imperfections.

❌ 2. Acne is a teenage problem 

Although the hormonal changes associated with puberty trigger (for most young people) acne, there are several types of acne that can affect all ages and especially women. Here are some examples:

- Juvenile acne vs. adult acne: Juvenile acne appears in adolescence and disappears naturally in adulthood. It presents itself in many forms: micro-cysts, inflammations including red spots, blackheads. The second is inflammatory and mainly present on the famous T-zone of the face, which is more prone to pimple development because it is more "oily".

- Hormonal acne: It appears when there is a hormonal imbalance. We often talk about it with Oh My Periods, our special premenstrual care. 

- cosmetica acne: Caused by unsuitable cosmetics that often clog the pores of the skin (silicones and other occlusive ingredients). The solution: change your routine for clean & safe products. 

- the mask: For some time now, many of us have had no choice but to wear a mask all day. The results: dryness, discomfort and blemishes.

❌ 3. The pill makes acne worse

This is not always the case and some pills can even limit the appearance of pimples. Because they contain hormones, they can influence acne. The 1st and 2nd generation pills can increase sebum production because they contain a testosterone derivative. But the progestogens in the 3rd and 4th generation pills do not contain testosterone and can even improve the quality of the skin. It should be remembered, however, that the latter can increase venous accidents.

❌4. Deli meats and chocolate promote acne

There is no proven link between these foods and acne. On the other hand, a varied and balanced diet should always be favored. We can also keep in mind that foods with a high glycemic index (such as white bread or French fries) can create blood sugar peaks, which then stimulate the production of hormones that cause acne.

❌ 5. Makeup is bad for acne

As mentioned above, there is a type of acne caused by cosmetics and especially by inappropriate makeup. However, this does not mean that makeup should be avoided. Makeup often helps to improve one's self-image and to feel more comfortable even when one has severe acne. The trick is to choose the right formulas so that they don't accentuate skin problems - non-comedogenic products. And above all, don't forget to remove makeup and clean up!

❌ 6. Acne is contagious

A received idea that often goes hand in hand with the relationship to hygiene. Well, no, acne is not contagious because bacteria do not proliferate on the surface of the skin but in the hair follicle. 

❌ 7. The sun, an ally against acne

Although at first glance the appearance of the skin seems to be improved, it is important to remember that the skin thickens after prolonged exposure to the sun, which favors the clogging of pores and therefore blackheads. Also be careful: medication for acne can increase the skin's sensitivity to UVA and UVB rays.
